At long last, the Grand Hotel Continental reopens its doors to the most discriminating guests, in the majestic Palazzo Gori, commissioned by the Chigi family to the architect Giovanni Fontana in the 17th century. In Piazza Salimbeni, the heart of the ancient Medieval city and just steps away from Piazza del Campo, this splendid aristocratic mansion now plays a vital role of the cultural heritage of Siena. As if by magic, refurbishment of the building has returned the ancient ornaments and magnificent frescoes to their original splendour. For light refreshment, there is the excellent wine bar for sampling prestigious vintages, to enjoy with typical Tuscan cheeses and cold cuts, situated in its medieval cellars. For more intimate moments, the silent beauty of the winter garden in the covered courtyard; for exclusive events, the sumptuous setting of the Salone delle Feste.
The great doors to each chamber usher you into spaces that it would be unjust to describe as mere rooms. From the suites to the "simple" single rooms, each one is different, with frescoed vaulted ceilings or coffered wooden beams, terracotta floors, prints and paintings of acknowledged value, and splendid period furniture. How can anyone fail to be thrilled on entering the magnificent San Cristoforo suite with its precious authentic 15th-century fresco, the tower suite on two levels with bijou panoramic studio, or the delightful octagonal room with four-poster bed, the ideal love nest for newlyweds? The utmost care is lavished on each and every detail, from the precious marble of the bathrooms to the latest technology for contact with the rest of the world, all in flawless harmony to ensure that each guest's stay is more than perfect.
Sapordivino Italian restaurant It is hardly any wonder that the cream of Siena and its surroundings also choose this venue for lunch, dinner or an enticing aperitif to the accompaniment of a baby grand piano.
Property Amenities
Once a 17th century palace conceived by architect Giovanni Fontana, the Grand Hotel Continental has been meticulously restored to display original Baroque architectural features, frescoed ceilings, and 18th century ornamental motifs. Thick tapestries and ornate chandeliers meld with contemporary touches, such as glass-walled elevators. An elegant ballroom for banquets and private functions glows with trompe l’oeil and a coat of arms across the ceiling. Guests may lounge beneath a soaring glass ceiling in the interior courtyard, and sample super Tuscan vintages and traditional cuisine from Sapordivino, the hotel’s wine bar and restaurant. Beneath the public rooms, a restored enoteca from the 12th century is an authentic setting for wine tastings.
A shuttle service to Grand Hotel Continental’s sister hotel, Park Hotel Siena, allows access to an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, and 6-hole golf course and driving range. Meanwhile, the hotel’s central location near the Piazza del Campo and the Duomo puts guests near numerous historic landmarks and museums, and Siena’s pedestrian shopping district.
