Villa San Michele
Florence, Italy
A 15th-century Franciscan monastery has now been transformed into one of Europe's most charming and picturesque hotels. Only a few minutes from the center of Florence, Villa San Michele is an oasis of peace and unsurpassed beauty, surrounded by its own gardens and woodland on the Fiesole hills. The present aspect of the building, with its facade attributed to Michelangelo and the imposing lateral Loggia looking towards Florence, dates from the year 1600, when the monastery was enlarged and completely renovated at the expense of Giovanni di Bartolomeo Davanzati. In the 1980's, Orient-Express embarked upon a comprehensive restoration of the buildings, this time with the assistance of the Florence Fine Arts Authority. Over the past decade great care and expertise has been engaged to refurbish the entire Villa in a style that provides a luxurious environment while simultaneously maintaining the beauty and heritage of this magnificent building. There are 45 Guest rooms, most with windows which enjoy views over the Italian garden, the private woodland and hills of Fiesole. The Junior Suites with private garden and terrace, the Chapel, the "Orangerie" Limonaia Suites and all rooms located above the Loggia enjoy views over the town of Florence and the Arno valley. But the real asset of the Villa San Michele is its service: the dedicated team has created a reputation for which they are very proud. Most of these professionals have been working at the Villa San Michele for many years, creating a unique continuity of service, care and attention to the hotel's 'family' of guests who regularly return to stay. With its idyllic surroundings, delicious Tuscan dining, and spectacular location, The Villa San Michele attracts the most discerning clientele, boasting an incredible list of celebrities that have selected it for a relaxing vacation.

Property Amenities
Perched in the foothills of Fiesole overlooking Florence and the lush Arno Valley, this exquisitely preserved hotel was once a 15th century Franciscan monastery. Woodlands and landscaped gardens with lemon trees, roses, and wisteria encircle the property. The hotel’s façade is attributed to Michelangelo, and the stone heraldic emblem of the Davanzati family that once graced the exterior is still on view in the entrance arcade.
The Cloister of the old monastery with a 1642 fresco of The Last Supper, and the Cenacolo room, with its fireplace and vaulted ceiling, provide intimate settings for banquets, wedding parties, and business retreats. Alfresco dining is available in fair weather at the San Michelle Restaurant, known for its Italian wines, Tuscan specialties, and sweeping view of the Arno Valley.

Restaurant and bar service is also available at the hotel’s 82-foot outdoor pool, which affords a panoramic view of Florence and is open from late spring until early autumn. A modest fitness facility with cardiovascular and weight machines is on premises, and mountain bikes may be rented to explore the surrounding foothills. In-room massage is available upon request. A shuttle service provides frequent access to the historic city of Florence, six miles away.
